Mumbai, 11th: The Bombay High Court on Thursday (11th) has prohibited the Mumbai Municipal Corporation till April 23rd from carrying out new embankment work on the sea coast under the Coastal Road Project. Also, they have prohibited any stopping of project work in the Worli Sea Coast area. The bench also regretted the destruction of nature in many cities in the pursuit of development. Work on the State Government’s ambitious Coastal Road project from Marine Lines to Kandivali has started at Worli. Also, work on the outer bypass is also being started at Breach Candy.

However, both these phases of the project have been challenged in the courts through two PILs (public interest litigations). The Society for the Promotion of Agriculture and Nature and local residents have petitioned. and Mr. The petitions were heard before the bench of Chief Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Justice Nitin Jamdar. On behalf of the municipality, Advocate Anil Sakhare assured that the trees in the Tata Garden area of ​​Breach Candy would not be cut. The Municipal Corporation has proposed to axe about 200 trees here for the outer detour route. This decision has been opposed by the petitioners. On behalf of the petitioners, Advocate Ankit Kulkarni suggested that the municipality can create an external detour on the open plot in the same area. The bench said that the municipal corporation should consider this suggestion as it seems to be an alternative. On behalf of the petitioners, Advocate Gayatri Singh said that the filling work going on at the Worli coastline is affecting the environment and appealed that it should be stopped. Advocate Anil Sakhare on behalf of the municipality claimed that Mumbai is an island and about 70 percent of the city is filled, also, the environment is not harmed due to the related filling. The bench directed that the work be stopped till the next hearing. Members of the Koli community have also petitioned in this regard.

Coastal regulation information sought

Mumbai, 11th: A casting yard is to be set up at Juhu under Bandra-Versova Coastal Road Project. The High Court on Thursday directed the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Authority to present an expert officer on Friday to provide information on how coastal regulation is done in this work.

Zoru Bathena, an environmentalist, has filed a petition in the High Court against the cutting of mangrove trees in the Juhu Khardanda seashore area. The ongoing work on behalf of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation is in violation of the Coastal Regulation Act.

He alleged that the mangrove trees there are getting damaged due to lack of water. The corporation denied the allegation. It was said that the work is being done as per the rules regarding coastal zones 1 and 2. It was fine if only one or two pillars were to be erected, but setting up a full-fledged casting yard can definitely harm the environment. Therefore, the High Court opined that it would be useful to get information from expert authorities about how coastal areas are created.
