JNPT route blockaded by fishermen

First uprising in water in Uran; 300 people detained

Uran, 26 (Correspondent): The fishermen of the Koli community, who ventured into the sea despite the bitter cold of the morning and the gusty wind, succeeded in blocking the waterway today. About a hundred boats from Hanuman Koliwada in Uran and the families of Sabaar fishermen on them went out into the sea and blocked the passage of the ships in the JNPT port. The chain of hundreds of boats was closed for 4 consecutive hours from 7:00am to 12:00pm.

Since the government did not fulfill the demands for the rehabilitation of Hanuman Koliwada, they had been warned of an agitation since several days.

However, due to the lack of a solution, on Friday morning, fishermen's association and the citizens of the Koli community started an early morning protest. After getting information about the agitation, the local police cordoned off Hanuman Koliwada, armed police were stationed outside the fisherman's house since the night. When the gates were opened in the morning, the fishermen families were not deterred by the police who came to the door. Instead the police started arresting some female and male protestors at the entrance of the village. While this strike was going on, a hundred youths set their boats into the sea from the bay area behind Koliwada.

The issue will be solved after the discussion.

According to the villagers, the agitation was going to be indefinite. But MP Sunil Tatkare again requested MP Sharad Pawar and organized a meeting with Shipping Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and on Tuesday, March 4 in the Ministry in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Guardian Minister Aditi Tatkare, JNPT President Sanjay Sethi, Collector Nidhi Chaudhary and concerned officers and villagers. Therefore, until the meeting, the said movement has been suspended for some time, informed Parmanand Koli, Sarpanch of Hanuman Koliwada village.
