Interests of traditional fishermen prioritized: Aslam Shaikh

Malad, 29th (Correspondent) After the Maharashtra Marine Fisheries Regulation (Amendment) Ordinance was approved in the state cabinet meeting on October 6th, many people were wondering when this new law would be implemented in the state. On November 26, 2019, the Ordinance was signed by the Governor and started its implementation. Yesterday (28th) the Ordinance was converted into a law with the approval of both Houses of the State Legislature.

State Fisheries Minister Aslam Shaikh has expressed the view that the new act is in the interest of traditional fishermen as strict penal provisions have been made against LED, Purse seine fishing and illegal fishing.

"Several provisions have been included in the Act in consultation with the fishing community. Mainly it is aimed at creating a deterrent against illegal offshore fishing in the state's waters, as well as increased penalties on boats engaged in illegal LED and purse seine fishing." - Aslam Shaikh, Fisheries Minister.

Salient features of the law

1. Fine up to 5 lakhs for mechanized boat owner fishing without license.

2. Fines ranging from 1 to 6 lakhs for fishing using purse seine, ring seine (including small purse seines) or trawl nets with small baits.

3. Fines ranging from 5 to 20 lakhs to those caught fishing by LED and bull trawling.

4. Provision of fine from 2 lakhs to 6 lakhs and five times the value of fish caught if foreign boats fish in state territory.
