Action on two Purse Seine boats in Alibaug

Sakaal, Mumbai, Thursday 6 January 2022Malad, 5th (Correspondent): After the approval of the state legislature in the recently passed winter session of the new marine fishing law, the fisheries department of the state government has become extremely active against illegal fishing. Today (5th), Mahesh Devre, Regional Deputy Commissioner of Fisheries Department caught one illegal LED and two illegal Purse Seine boats. According to the amended law on these three boats, action will be taken.

According to the new law, there is a provision for a fine of Rs 5 lakh and confiscation of boats, nets and other materials for the first offense for using LEDs, while there is a provision for a fine of Rs 1 lakh for the first offense for illegal purse seine fishing. Fisheries Minister Aslam Shaikh has ordered strict implementation of the new fishing law and daily submission of action reports. After taking action in Sindhudurg district against illegal purse seines and LED in the last few days, the Fisheries Department has become active in other fishing districts.
