Boats run risk of crashing: Coastal road’s metal walkway collapses

Mumbai, 21st: The metal walkway on the pillars erected for the Coastal Road collapsed into the sea in July. Even after four months, it has not been taken out of the sea. There is a fear of boats hitting it as the walkway falls along the fishing route used by the fishermen. The concerned contractor has been informed about this and instructions have been given to remove it with the help of a barge crane, said Mantaiah Swamy, Chief Engineer, Coastal Road Project.

A coastal road is under construction in the sea near Worli. On three pillars erected at this place, a metal walkway was built for the thoroughfare of workers. However, during the first week of July, the metal walkway collapsed into the sea due to strong winds and torrential rains. After witnessing this, the fishermen of Worli Koliwada reported this to the municipal authorities. However, Nitesh Patil, Director of Worli Koliwada Nakhawa Trade Co-operative Society informed that it has not been taken out yet.

Discussions have been held with the fishermen. The concerned contractor has been asked to remove the metal walk-way. A barge crane is required to remove the walk-way and the same has been arranged by the contractor, said Mantaiah Swamy, Chief Engineer, Coastal Road Project.

These walk-ways are located in areas where fishermen's boats pass. A single walkway is approximately 7 meters long. 3 such walkways fell into the sea. These walk-ways are located approximately 200 meters from the Worli beach. Nitesh Patil also said that they are not easily visible from above, but a part of it is visible during low tide.

The Worli Koliwada Nakhwa Trade Society discussed with the Coastal Road Authority about the walkway lying in the sea. But since the concerned officers are being transferred frequently, the problem persists, said Nitesh Patil.
