Fishers are important producers and keepers of coastal knowledge. Through their music, they have been documenting their long relationship with their environment. Koli music (or Koli geete or songs) comprises a treasure-chest of coastal knowledge, being born from fishers’ livelihood and life amidst a wet terrain.
When listening to these songs, one can feel the (rocking, rowing) rhythm of the sea that strongly marks this music. We are also struck by the gendered and entangled land-sea nature of this fishing world, where male fishers fish in the sea while fisher women deal with the fish in wet terrains on land.
Folk music from the Koliwadas of coastal Maharashtra forms part of the famous genre of Koli Geet. Famous music houses like Sa Re Ga Ma, Venus, and Ishtar have made it an inseparable feature of the Marathi music industry and its popularity has reached all corners of the State. Even today, Koli Geet can be heard and seen in contemporary and mainstream media and new musicians are keeping it alive in the heart of Maharashtra.
